Should Christians be involved in politics?

30 October 2010

Do you know what I secretly desire to do?  I want to move to the country and have a little house and a garden.  I want to read books, and make strawberry jam and play my guitar.  I want to make quilts and gather herbs from my garden to dry and make into aromatic wreaths.  I want to have friends over for tea and just laugh and talk and sing.  I want to work on projects around the house and watch movies with my husband.  I want to play scrabble with my boys and try new recipes with them.  I want to learn to make quilts.  I want to listen to my children  play the piano.

I’m selfish.  I don’t want to talk about politics at all, and I have no desire to be privy to all the evil that’s going on right now. I want to let all the progressives do their thing and face the consequences of their sin.  I’m like Jonah.  I don’t want to warn anybody about anything. I’m not brave or self-sacrificing like our founders were.  I’m not like Abigail Adams or Martha Washington.  If not for them….if not for the Christians we would not have a United States of America at all.

I don’t believe God wants me to live the good life and not care that our world is crumbling.  He has called me to be a soldier and to fight this culture war.  He has called us all to do our part and  defend freedom and all that is good.  He has called on us to be involved in praying for and selecting Godly leaders.  He has called us to VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Please vote this Tuesday.  Please vote for the conservatives in your part of the Country.  Please…let’s all do our part to save our America!

Matthias Burnett  (1774 – 1819)

Consider well the important trust . . . which God . . . [has] put into your hands. . . . To God and posterity you are accountable for [your rights and your rulers]. . . . Let not your children have reason to curse you for giving up those rights and prostrating those institutions which your fathers delivered to you. . . . [L]ook well to the characters and qualifications of those you elect and raise to office and places of trust. . . . Think not that your interests will be safe in the hands of the weak and ignorant; or faithfully managed by the impious, the dissolute and the immoral. Think not that men who acknowledge not the providence of God nor regard His laws will be uncorrupt in office, firm in defense of the righteous cause against the oppressor, or resolutely oppose the torrent of iniquity. . . . Watch over your liberties and privileges – civil and religious – with a careful eye.

Charles Finney

[T]he time has come that Christians must vote for honest men and take consistent ground in politics or the Lord will curse them. . . . Christians have been exceedingly guilty in this matter. But the time has come when they must act differently. . . . Christians seem to act as if they thought God did not see what they do in politics. But I tell you He does see it – and He will bless or curse this nation according to the course they [Christians] take [in politics].

James Garfield

Now more than ever the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave, and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature. . . . [I]f the next centennial does not find us a great nation . . . it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.

John Jay

Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation, to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.

[John Jay, The Correspondence and Public Papers of John Jay, Henry P. Johnston, ed. (New York: G.P. Putnams Sons, 1890), Vol. IV, p. 365.]

The Americans are the first people whom Heaven has favored with an opportunity of deliberating upon and choosing the forms of government under which they should live.

William Penn

Governments, like clocks, go from the motion men give them; and as governments are made and moved by men, so by them they are ruined too. Wherefore governments rather depend upon men than men upon governments. Let men be good and the government cannot be bad. . . . But if men be bad, let the government be never so good, they will endeavor to warp and spoil it to their turn. . . .[T]hough good laws do well, good men do better; for good laws may want [lack] good men and be abolished or invaded by ill men; but good men will never want good laws nor suffer [allow] ill ones.

The Sack Lunch

29 October 2010

I received this in an email and it touched my heart so deeply that I wanted to share it with you all. This story reminded me of a time that my boys and I stopped at Carls’s Jr. for lunch one day.  It was crowded and the kids from the local highschool were all hanging out there.  These kids were boisterous and rude. They were dressed like punks with their pants falling down.  I  made my boys hold my hand because I was sort of  frightened by the rowdy behavior of the teens.  Standing in striking contrast to the teens was   a young soldier who was waiting for his order.   He was clean cut and handsome.  The contrast between this self controlled neat looking soldier and the punkish kids was so remarkable that I never forgot it. It almost seemed like he did not belong there…as if he stepped out of another culture somewhere in time.  I wanted to to shake the soldiers  hand and thank him.  I wanted to buy him lunch, but I was too shy.  My own insecurities kept me from doing the right thing.  I will always regret this, and now whenever I see a soldier, I stop and thank them.  Next time I’m buying him lunch. ~Anne

The Sack Lunch

I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight. ‘I’m glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will get a short nap,’ I thought.

Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation.

‘Where are you headed?’ I asked the soldier seated nearest to me.
‘Petawawa. We’ll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we’re being deployed to Afghanistan

After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for five dollars. It would be several hours before we reached the east, and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time..

As I reached for my wallet, I overheard a soldier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch. ‘No, that seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch. Probably wouldn’t be worth five bucks. I’ll wait till we get to base.’ His friend agreed.

I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch. I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant a fifty dollar bill. ‘Take a lunch to all those soldiers.’ She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. ‘My son was a soldier in Iraq; it’s
almost like you are doing it for him.’

Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the soldiers were seated. She stopped at my seat and asked, ‘Which do you like best – beef or chicken?’

‘Chicken,’ I replied, wondering why she asked. She turned and went to the front of plane, returning a minute later with a dinner plate from first class. ‘This is your thanks..’

After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the plane, heading for the rest room. A man stopped me. ‘I saw what you did. I want to be part of it. Here, take this.’ He handed me twenty-five dollars.

Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Flight Captain coming down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he walked, I hoped he was not looking for me, but noticed he was looking at the numbers only on my side of the plane. When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held out his hand and said, ‘I want to shake your hand.’ Quickly unfastening my seatbelt I stood and took the Captain’s hand. With a booming voice he said, ‘I was a soldier and I was a military pilot. Once, someone bought me a lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot.’ I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of the passengers.

Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. A man who was seated about six rows in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another twenty-five dollars in my palm.

When we landed I gathered my belongings and started to deplane. Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man who stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket, turned, and walked away without saying a word.
Another twenty-five dollars!

Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their trip to the base. I walked over to them and handed them seventy-five dollars. ‘It will take you some time to reach the base. It will be about time for a sandwich. God Bless You.’

Ten young men left that flight feeling the love and respect of their fellow travelers.

As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a prayer for their safe return. These soldiers were giving their all for our country. I could only give them a couple of meals. It seemed so little…

‘Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen.’

Pre-Election Blues

26 October 2010

Probably because of the election coming up on Nov 2, I’m feeling very distracted and somewhat melancholy these days.  I’m not as heavy-hearted as I was the day after the last Presidential election, but I guess my pessimistic nature is sensing gloom and doom for our America.  Because of the apathy and lack of knowledge I see in my own circles as well as in the media,  I feel as though the progressives will probably be able to continue with their evil agenda for America.  I feel like we are on a sinking ship and no one cares to know,  or even talk about it.
I’m not saying that I have all this understanding….I’m ashamed of myself as well,  but I am desperate to learn and always willing to talk, listen, pray, and read about what’s going on in our country right now.  Most importantly, I am willing to take 20 minutes to fill out my sample voter ballot and vote!!  I heard today that the elections in in Afghanistan (where you could face death) have a 98% voter turn out.  What is wrong with us!!!

For reasons that dumbfound me, many Americans do not vote. However, the average  hardworking American family, although lacking an Ivy league education, knows right from wrong and we know when we have been duped.  We know that this administration is not looking out for us.

This election on Nov 2 is our deal breaker.  It is not simply politics as usual.  Many of the  big spending progressives that we have elected do not have the best interest of our country on their minds at all.  This election is crucial because the folks in the White House are not merely talking about big  changes; they are working furiously to fulfill the words of our President to “fundamentally change our America.”  If the Republicans do not win in a huge way on Nov 2, I believe that our America will never be the same again.  Dennis Prager said that this election is not simply an election,  but is actually a referendum on the direction of the United States of America.

If the progressives maintain their majority, they will work towards an unsustainable expanding government and will turn our country from a land of freedoms and opportunity to a welfare state. They will undermine opportunity for growth and prosperity though taxes, regulations,  and new environmental laws.  Just as Obama told Joe The Plumber , they will continue to  redistribute wealth.  America will no longer be able to be the magnanimous country that it is, because we will all be barely keeping our head above water.  I heard that the debt we are running up is equivalent to handing each of our children and grandchildren a bill of over $250,000.

The government will continue to print money, raise taxes, promote welfare and pass environmental rules, laws and fees based upon faulty science and political correctness.

I think the worst thing of all about the liberal  progressives  (who happen to be mostly democrat) is that they will  undermine our Judeo/Christian heritage and family values. Dear homeschool families,  please know that the liberals in our government do not value what you value.  If the democrats win this November,  I won’t be the only one with the blues, we all will be in the depths of despair.  Proverbs 29:2 reminds us that when the righteous rule, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule the people mourn.

Made in the USA

25 October 2010

John Smith started the day early,
having set his alarm clock (MADE IN JAPAN) for 6 am.

While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA) was perking,
he shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG),
and put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA),
designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE) and
tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA).

After cooking his breakfast in his new
electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA),
he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO),
to see how much he could spend today.

After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN)
to the radio (MADE IN INDIA),
he got in his car (MADE IN JAPAN),
filled it with GAS (from SAUDIA ARABIA)
to continued his search for a good paying AMERICAN JOB.

At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day
checking his Computer (made in MALAYSIA),
John decided to relax for a while.

He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL),
poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE)
and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA),

and then wondered why he can’t find
a good paying job in AMERICA.

Perhaps we need to change our life styles a bit in order to support businesses right here in the USA.  I’m going to try to at least begin making small changes in our purchasing in order to help our America survive.  I have not ordered from any of these companies or used any products listed here except for Cabela’s,  New Balance shoes, and a few others.  ~Anne
